Now that the Flu has officially hit epidemic status, most of us have more than likely gotten into defense mode. While there are no at-home remedies that can quite beat the effectiveness of a flu shot or a visit to the doctor, we’ve outlined to you the best way to end a rough day of fighting that pesky virus. Hopefully, we can help you feel a bit more human if you find yourself feeling particularly victimized by Flu Season 2018.

First things first, make a cup of tea. Staying hydrated is always important, and there are so many different ways you can spice up your tea to make it both incredibly effective AND interesting. Check out our favorite sick-day tea recipe — it’s easy to make, and targeted to help relieve all of the most annoying flu-like symptoms. Honey and lemon together are fantastic for soothing sore throats, while the aromatic thyme helps sooth both stomaches and that distinct flu-season cough. The spicy ginger helps relieve nausea and muscle pain, while cinnamon and green tea are both full of antioxidants perfect for getting you back to your old, healthy self. Not to mention it’s super yummy, and the slight thyme fragrance is soothing and subtle enough to clear up your airways as it steams your face.

You will need:

  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 bag of your favorite green tea
  • 1 tbsp of honey
  • 1 tbsp of fresh ginger
  • 3 sprigs of fresh thyme
  • 1 slice of lemon
  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional)
  • Your favorite mug!

 First, boil at least two cups of water. Then, cut and peal around a tablespoon of ginger and set aside at least three sprigs of thyme (add more if you'd like a stronger tea). Once the water has come to a boil, take off heat, add both ginger and thyme, and let steep for 5-10 minutes covered (again, depending on how strong you’d like it to be). Get your favorite mug ready by adding your green tea, a tablespoon of honey, a slice of lemon, and a cinnamon stick (optional). Once your tea has finished steeping, remove the sprigs, pour the water into your mug, stir, let rest, then enjoy!
